The Ricercare on Nun komm der Heiden Heiland was composed for and first performed at the SMU Perkins Chapel Christmas Lessons and Carols service in December, 2004. This piece was the postlude of the service. Earlier in the service, there was the premiere of my choral arrangement of the same chorale. J.S. Bach composed several organ works on this chorale, and thus we know it was one of his favorites. The Ricercare is a 5-voice work, with each phrase of the chorale tune getting its own contrapuntal treatment, with the Pedal coming in as the last voice to enter, in augmentation. At the end there is a short coda in diminution. The style of the piece is inspired by contrapuntal works of the 18th century, although there are a few elements that reveal it's most definitely not from that era.
